Harley-Davidson Gets On board with USS SOUTH DAKOTA (SSN 790)

Commemorative Harley-Davidson 2018 Street Glide Motorcycle

When a submarine is named after the state with some of the best motorcycle riding in America, there’s only one thing to do: create a custom Harley-Davidson to mark the occasion.

Harley-Davidson Motor Company donated a 2018 H-D Street Glide motorcycle to the Navy League of the United States, South Dakota Council, to commemorate the USS SOUTH DAKOTA (SSN 790). Several entities have come together to create a one-of-a-kind motorcycle that will proudly represent the ship and its namesake state for years to come. Local South Dakota artist, Mickey Harris, designed the paint for the motorcycle, incorporating both the Battleship SOUTH DAKOTA (BB 57) and the USS SOUTH DAKOTA (SSN 790) in the creation. J&L Harley-Davidson of Sioux Falls is the sponsoring dealer for the project and has donated H-D parts and labor for the project.

The motorcycle was present next to SSN 790 when the boat was officially christened as “SOUTH DAKOTA” on October 14th, 2017. The bike was also displayed at Harley-Davidson Motor Company headquarters located in Milwaukee, WI in October of 2017.

The bike will tour the state with the USS SOUTH DAKOTA Commissioning Committee before traveling to be present for the official Commissioning Ceremony. Upon return to South Dakota, the Harley will be displayed at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Motorcycle Hall of Fame located in Sturgis, SD. When USS SOUTH DAKOTA crew members visit, they’ll be able to check the bike out of the museum and ride it anywhere in the state of South Dakota.

USS SOUTH DAKOTA (SSN 790) is expected to be in service with the Navy’s submarine fleet for three decades. The Commemorative USS SOUTH DAKOTA Harley-Davidson 2018 Street-Glide will stand ready as the crew’s official motorcycle and help build bonds between the Sailors and South Dakota.
