Sioux Falls Navy Week
Before its commissioning, South Dakotans will have the opportunity to be a part of the submarine’s history at a number of events throughout the state. View the schedule below or contact us for details about each event and how you can get involved.
April 2016 – Keel laying ceremony: The keel is the longitudinal structure along the centerline at the bottom of a vessel’s hull, on which the rest of the hull is built. During the keel laying ceremony, Mrs. Dempsey, the ship’s sponsor, will etch her initials into the keel plate, verifying that the “keel has been truly and fairly laid.”
Summer/Fall 2017 – Christening: The sub will officially be christened the USS SOUTH DAKOTA. The ship’s sponsor, Mrs. Dempsey, will bestow the ship’s name while smashing a bottle of champagne on the bow.
February 2, 2019 – Commissioning: The PCU SOUTH DAKOTA will be commissioned for service and officially become the USS SOUTH DAKOTA (SSN 790). In an important Naval ceremony, the United States Navy accepts the submarine, which then officially becomes a part of the active Navy Fleet. Mrs. Dempsey, the ship’s sponsor, will proclaim, “Man our ship and bring her to life” upon which time the crew boards the ship.
