USS SOUTH DAKOTA (SSN 790)
The 17th Virginia Class nuclear submarine has it all: stealth, endurance, innovation and the ability to defend the safety and security of the United States of America. While its predecessor roared through the seas, the USS SOUTH DAKOTA (SSN 790) will be a silent protector with the newest innovations of any fast-attack submarine in the United States Navy fleet. The boat was christened on October 14, 2017 and is now entering the final phase prior to commissioning.
On February 2 at 11:00 AM, the PCU SOUTH DAKOTA will be commissioned for service and officially become the USS SOUTH DAKOTA (SSN 790). The ceremony, currently scheduled to take place in Groton, CT, at Electric Boat.
*To ensure everyone can witness this historic day, the event will be handicap accessible. Transportation from the parking lot to the pier will be offered for wheelchair and limited mobility attendees. We will also make proper event seating accommodations to anyone in a wheelchair, but they must bring their own wheelchairs.
Special events are planned for Thursday, January 31st and Friday, February 1st leading up to the Commissioning Ceremony on Saturday, February 2nd, 2019.
