USS SOUTH DAKOTA (SSN 790)
The 17th Virginia Class nuclear submarine has it all: stealth, endurance, innovation and the ability to defend the safety and security of the United States of America. While its predecessor roared through the seas, the USS SOUTH DAKOTA (SSN 790) will be a silent protector with the newest innovations of any fast-attack submarine in the United States Navy fleet. The boat was christened on October 14, 2017 and is now entering the final phase prior to commissioning.
PCU SOUTH DAKOTA will likely be commissioned for service and officially become the USS SOUTH DAKOTA (SSN 790) during the winter of 2019. The ceremony is expected to take place in Groton, CT. The Secretary of the Navy will determine the date and location of the boat’s commissioning. As soon as we have any additional information, it will be posted on this site, our Facebook page and released to the media. The Commissioning Ceremony is an important milestone and Naval tradition where the United States Navy will officially accept the submarine as a part of the active Navy Fleet.
