Commissioning Ceremony

The 17th Virginia Class nuclear submarine has it all: stealth, endurance, innovation and the ability to defend the safety and security of the United States of America. While its predecessor roared through the seas, the USS SOUTH DAKOTA (SSN 790) will be a silent protector with the newest innovations of any fast-attack submarine in the United States Navy fleet. The boat was christened on October 14, 2017 and is now entering the final phase prior to commissioning.

Commissioning Information

In late 2018, the PCU SOUTH DAKOTA will be commissioned for service and officially become the USS SOUTH DAKOTA (SSN 790). The ceremony, currently scheduled to take place in Groton, CT, at Electric Boat, is an important Naval tradition where the United States Navy will officially accept the submarine as a part of the active Navy Fleet.
