Commemorative Firearms Honor South Dakota’s New Submarine

A commemorative shotgun and pistol have been created to celebrate the state’s new namesake vessel

South Dakota’s firearms industry has embraced the USS SOUTH DAKOTA (SSN 790) with a set of spectacular custom firearms. The shotgun is a Remington 870 Wingmaster, which features a blue and gold stock created by Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks of Mitchell, SD. The shotgun was selected for the project as a tribute to South Dakota’s pheasant hunting tradition.

The pistol is a Colt 1911 .45 ACP in stainless steel. The Colt 1911 has a rich military history and was the official sidearm of many service members for much of America’s history. The Commemorative USS SOUTH DAKOTA Colt 1911 Pistol was also engraved by A&A Engraving of Rapid City. The firearm features custom steel grips that were engraved with the submarine’s official crest. The pistol’s slide features a silhouette of the submarine, the boat’s motto, the Great Seal of the State of South Dakota and a MK 48 Torpedo.

The stock bears the signatures of South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard; Commander Ronald Withrow, first Commanding Officer of PCU SOUTH DAKOTA; and Master Chief Bryan Randall, first Chief of the Boat of PCU SOUTH DAKOTA. The stock also features the Submarine Warfare Qualification Insignia for both the officers and enlisted members of the crew and fish scale engraved grips. The action of the shotgun was engraved by A&A Engraving of Rapid City, SD, and features the official crest of the submarine, the Great Seal of the State of South Dakota, and a silhouette of the submarine.

Crew members of PCU SOUTH DAKOTA have been invited to purchase commemorative firearms at a reduced cost and the custom firearms are available as a donor recognition gift for significant commissioning project contributors. The Commissioning Committee is also raffling a commemorative shotgun and pistol to help raise funds needed to support the commissioning. The drawing for the shotgun and pistol will be held on the day the submarine is commissioning or on Saturday, December 22, 2018 – whichever occurs first.
